BFSSI, September 2016 Food Consumption Table (2004 CCHS 2.2) Objective To present consumption values for foods at group levels under ten main food groups for consistent use between the Bureau of Food Surveillance and Science Integration in Food Directorate and substances risk assessment groups within Health Canada. Data Source (1) Statistics Canada, Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS), Cycle 2.2, Nutrition (2004) - Share File (2) National Centre for Health Statistics, National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 1999-2010 How to cite data from the Food Consumption Table (FCT) For published articles, studies, and reports using data extracted from the FCT, suggested citation for the FCT is as follows: Health Canada (2015). Food Consumption Table derived from Statistics Canada, Canadian Community Health Survey, Cycle 2.2, Nutrition (2004), Share file. Ottawa. Notes 1. Estimates: 1.1 All estimates of intakes are daily (not usual) consumptions based on the first 24-hour dietary recall only and weighted using the sample weights provided with the CCHS 2.2. 1.2 Standard errors (SEs) are calculated by software of SUDAAN using bootstrap replication. 1.3 Filters are added on columns of Food group code, Age and Sex for search function in the Excel spreadsheets only. 2. Food groups: 2.1 All Bureau of Nutritional Sciences food groups are categorized into ten main food groups (Grain products, Dairy products, Fats, Meats, Meat alternatives, Vegetables, Fruits, Beverages, Babyfood products and Miscellaneous) and the intakes are presented on ten separate tabs in the Excel file or in ten separate CSV files. 2.2 For a full listing of the food groups and subgroups, a short description and special notes, see file entitled "Food Group List". 2.3 Estimates of food intakes are presented at three levels of food groups - main food group, food group and food sub-group. 2.4 Recipe groups are not presented on the tables. 3. Food reconstitution: Food items in some food groups are reconstituted. For additional details, refer to the “Food Group List” file. 4. Body weights: 4.1 Body weights are used to calculate intakes of per kg body weight. 4.2 Since body weights were not collected for respondents under two years old in the CCHS 2.2, medians of body weights from the NHANES 1999-2010 are used to assign the values of body weights for those respondents. 4.3 For those at two years or older, measured or self-reported body weights were used. Imputed body weight values are assigned to those with neither a measured nor a self-reported body weight. The method of imputation can be found in the User Guide for the Food Consumption Table. 4.4 Medians of body weight by age and sex for respondents in this analysis are presented on the Body Weights tab or CSV file. 5. Symbols 5.1 In the Excel spreadsheet only, comment boxes (red triangle) are added to some columns: Number of Respondents, % of Eaters, Mean and Percentiles which allow users to easily understand what the columns are and what the symbols stand for. The same information is captured in 5.2 below. 5.2 See below the symbols assigned based on the data release guidelines of Statistics Canada: E - Data with a coefficient of variation (CV) from 16.6% to 33.3%; interpret with caution. F - Data are suppressed due to: (1) Extreme sampling variability - a CV greater than 33.3% (2) Number of eaters less than 30 (3) A percentile with zero value resulting in an invalid point estimate of SE (4) Number of eaters less than 100 for 90th percentile, and less than 200 for 95th percentile under Eaters Only Consumption or number of respondents less than 100 for 90th percentile, and less than 200 for 95th percentile under All Person Consumption 6. Limitations in table use : 6.1 All FCT estimates are daily intake estimates calculated from the first 24-hour dietary recall and reflect food intake amounts on a given day. 6.2 All estimates of daily intakes for food groups were generated by combining foods consumed as a food on its own and ingredient in recipes. 6.3 Intake data are available for the 15 Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) age-sex groups and limited customized age-sex groups. Values from different age-sex groups presented in the FCT cannot be combined. 6.4 Intake data for foods that are not commonly consumed might be absent for some age-sex groups.
